A WELCOME TO ALL, Parishioners and visitors
Beginning next weekend, there will be a variety of PRIEST-PRESIDER-VISITORS at our weekend and weekday Masses. I am grateful for the generosity of so many of my brother-priests for their willingness to help us out during the next two months while I am undergoing radiation therapy. Some of them will be doing extra duty because of such generosity. I will be keeping a low profile, especially until I know how the treatments will affect me. An abundance of prayers and loving care has been poured over on me already by so many of you as well as family and friends. I am very aware of that support and dependent on it because I know the power of prayer and friendship, given and received. Thank you, and God bless each of you for it.
As mentioned earlier, we have started the new season of worship, service and education. LEADERSHIP PEOPLE from committees, councils and service areas of the parish met together early in the month. Together they began the year by identifying their projects and how they have done well in them. That positive reflection empowered them to begin this new season with a sense of confidence in how they will enliven and enlarge our faith community this year. Last weekend, volunteer MINISTERS of every area of parish worship and education renewed their commitments to our community, were acknowledged and prayed for at all the Masses. Such a beginning encourages all of us in who we are and what we do for the kingdom of God that we care for.
Do you ever wonder why the PRESIDER'S CHAIR in the sanctuary is centered, between the lectern and the altar? Some might think that is rather audacious. Isn't the Word of God in Scripture and the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist of the altar central to our worship and our faith? The priest at Mass used to be called "celebrant", but the more precise term is "presider". The priest does preside over the community, he is responsible for the worship, he is the leader of the prayer that we all make together, he is the one who is ordained (ordered) to lead the Mass and speaks that offering to God through Jesus in the name of the whole community. So too the priest-pastor is the one charged by the Bishop of a diocese to care for the whole faith community of a parish -- what it does in worship, education and service to its people and to people in need. The chair in that central position is a reminder, not of the privileged position of the priest, but of the responsibility he has to be a worthy and faithful leader, model, the one who forms and gathers together the family of God entrusted to him. —Father Ralph
