“Arise and Eat, Else the Journey Will Be Too Great for You.” (I Kings 19:7) |

PEACE AND FELLOWSHIP TO YOU ALL
I want to share with you some news that will affect my presence at Masses, meetings and in the school for a couple of months. On September 25, I will begin 8 1/2 weeks of radiation treatment five days a week. I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and have been assured that this treatment process will kill the cells and prevent any further growth of the cancer. The cancer is a "slow-moving" one, and involves only five percent of the prostate. I am fortunate for the early discovery, and for the advanced radiation treatment that the U. of M. Hospital can provide. As most of you know, I am a "bleeder". The radiation has some possibility of irritating some internal organs, and this can cause internal bleeding. I now receive plasma transfusions every other week to assist coagulation; I may need more on occasion during this treatment period. Also, fatigue is generally a side-effect of radiation. Archbishop Flynn has given me permission to take this time off as long as we have coverage here for the Sacramental life of the parish (Masses, funerals, confessions, etc.). I am arranging with priests who might be available during October and November for this coverage. The parish staff, Councils, committee and project leaders are aware of these arrangements. I assure you that the vibrant faith life, education and ministry of the parish will continue because of their dedication and competence. I will be pastor, living at the rectory, and will be present at those events for which I can and need to be present. I know I can count on your understanding and prayers during this time. You have shared some significant events with me in my life, and I have been very supported by you at those times. Here we go again, and I want you to know how I appreciate you all as my family at this kind of time. Thank you all very much. In Latin we used to say: Oremus pro invicem—let us pray for each other! —Father Goman |
