WELCOME! May God’s Spirit enliven our lives and faith today
Our Catholic Christian church survives and thrives through the centuries as a community and as a force in the world. Today we understand again why: the Church is of God and is empowered by the Spirit of God. The Apostles witnessed Jesus physically ascend to heaven after his mission as God-among-us was completed; they reluctantly saw him leave our human world. His promise to be with us always was, for the moment, forgotten. But they remembered that promise; they waited in that upper room impatiently for its fulfillment. And when the Spirit of God descended upon them— on PENTECOST—there was born in them a new spirit of faith, confidence, wisdom, fortitude, courage, and commitment. They set the world afire beginning on that day, the first day of the message of Jesus being proclaimed to the whole world. It was the birth, the BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH. Happy Birthday! That same Spirit is ours every day. On this day that Spirit is with us in powerful and new ways. Let us pray that we welcome that Spirit and live by that Spirit. Then we—people of God everywhere—can proclaim “welcome” to each other by our witness to God’s love, by our forgiveness to those alienated from us. Then we can understand others, and bring God’s life to them as Jesus has taught us: we can be people of hope, faith, service and oneness with each other even with our differences. The Church has done much through the centuries. You and I know how much there is left to do: wars, violence, hunger, disease, ignorance, reluctance, division and anger among even the people of God. But you and I know we can and must do some of that ministry. The Spirit offers to set us “afire” today. Will we accept that offer and that power for good?
The Spirit of God descends in a unique way upon seven men of our Archdiocese as they are ordained priests this weekend. DEACON GREGORY ABBOTT is among them. We all remember him from his ministry and presence here last summer, his deacon summer assignment. We pray for each of these new priests. We ask God’s Spirit to guide and direct them in their own faith life and in their ministry to God’s people. Father Abbott will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving here on Saturday, June 9, at 5:00 pm. Please accept his invitation to celebrate this Mass with him, his gift to us for what we gave him last summer. There will be a reception for him in the Community Room following Mass.
ALTAR SERVERS are one of the many ministries of a parish church, but OUR Altar Servers are special. They are (for the most part) faithful to their assignments, and always right on in serving responsibilities. We will honor them with an “ice cream” social, gifts and awards, on Saturday, June 2, after the 5:00 pm Mass in the Community Room. All Servers and their families are invited. (I need more than a little help to pull this off, so parents who can help— please call me soon!) —Father Ralph

The Traveling Chalice “Hosting the TRAVELING CHALICE kit was a good reminder for prayers for vocations and the future of the Church. . .it also helped us focus our daily prayers. . .”(notation by a family who hosted the Traveling Chalice). Phil and Huong Hirsch and their family will host the kit this week. As parishioners, we are grateful to them, and to the Michael and Amy Tomsche family who led our parish in prayer for religious vocations last week. |
