“Arise and Eat, Else the Journey Will Be Too Great for You.” (I Kings 19:7) |

WELCOME, AND BLESSINGS ON YOUR LENTEN JOURNEY R. C. I. A. stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a school-year-long process for any adult who wants to know more about his/her gift of faith and about the Catholic faith. That person may be someone not baptized, or a baptized Christian, or a baptized Catholic, perhaps not yet confirmed. Earlier in the fall, and again last weekend, many of you were introduced to R.C.I.A. members NICK BANDARU who is not baptized and therefore is a catechumen, and MICHAEL BJORGAN, CURTIS DEERING and DEBORAH O'BRIEN, who are baptized Christians and therefore candidates, and DAWN BELL SCHINDLER, a baptized Catholic not yet confirmed and therefore also a candidate. You met them (at the 10:00 a.m. Mass) because our parish community "sent them" to the Basilica of St. Mary and to Auxiliary Bishop Richard Pates for the Rite of Election, the ceremony officially welcoming them into the final weeks of preparation for the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Last weekend we promised our prayers, support and friendship to these new members of our community. At the Basilica ceremony, Bishop Pates promised them the same from the whole church of the Archdiocese. Almost 2000 people were at that ceremony. More than that number were at the same ceremony which Archbishop Harry Flynn presided over in the Cathedral of St. Paul. Wow! is an appropriate word for anyone who witnessed this ceremony and for anyone who can envision it. There are many, many people seeking God, seeking to deepen their faith and to be part of a believing and supportive community of brothers and sisters in faith. It humbles some of us "cradle Catholics" to witness so many doing so much to learn about our God and our Church, and to confirm their faith. Our R.C.I.A. community numbers about 25 people, the candidates, catechumen, their sponsors and some Catholics who are there to update their faith. Perhaps you know someone who might be seeking this kind of learning and faith experience. Let me know. Meanwhile, continue to welcome and pray for Nick, Michael, Curtis, Deborah and Dawn as they journey toward the holiest of nights, the Easter Vigil, and the completion of their welcome into the Catholic Christian faith. —Father Ralph
