ALL ARE WELCOME

All are welcome, and that invitation to St. John the Evangelist is true at all times.  The welcome is especially sincere for HOLY WEEK:  the celebrations of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday Easter Vigil and Mass, and Easter Sunday.  This weekend marks the beginning of Passiontide, the two weeks before Easter when the Passion of our Lord takes even greater prominence in the liturgy and in our prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  The Triduum (the three days before Easter) are the most holy and most meaningful liturgies of our faith.  We literally relive the Last Supper when the Lord Jesus gave us the Eucharist as our everlasting union on earth with him.  Similarly, on Good Friday we witness by faith the eternal dying of Jesus for our sins.  And at the Easter Vigil we begin our long, powerful prayer in darkness that matches that of the tomb, of death; but the Light of Christ (the Easter Candle and our sung "lumen Christi"—light of Christ) pierces the darkness and proclaims Jesus is risen from the tomb, alive and with us always.  From that beginning, we hear our faith journey, our history with God, from the Scriptures; we burst forth in praise of God with the GLORIA and the ALLELUIA—put “on hold” during Lent; we celebrate signs that all is new and holy: the water of the Baptism font, Baptism and Confirmation of adult converts to the faith, our own renewal of Baptism vows; and then we join the Lord and Savior in the great and continued offering of his life to God, and become one with that offering as we are united with God and each other in the Eucharist.

If you have celebrated the Holy Week services before, I know you look forward to celebrating these great events again.  If you have not attend the Holy Week services yet, this might be the year to do so.  All are welcome. All owe it to themselves to enter into the Holy Week celebrations.  See you there!

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) is a powerful and traditional way to enter into the spirit of Lent and be prepared for the great celebrations of Holy Week.  Plan ahead.  Wednesday at 7:00 pm is the parish's Lenten Penance Service.  Archbishop Harry Flynn will preside and prepare us to turn from sin and to God's life by contrition for our sins and by God's healing and loving forgiveness.  Check the schedule for other opportunities for the private celebration of Reconciliation.

A blessed Passiontide to each of you and to those you love. —Father Ralph
