Opportunity Outreach—Support for the Hopkins Youth Ministry Summer Mission “When I saw how the people who were less fortunate than I lived and what their houses that they lived in were like, I wanted to work harder to make sure they were happy.” That is what Heather Anderson stated after returning from last year’s mission to Alabama. This year, you have the opportunity to help other students like Heather participate in our mission by supporting this month’s (June 24th and 25th) Opportunity Outreach recipient: The Hopkins Catholic Youth Ministry Summer Mission. Our program is teaming up with Catholic HEART (Helping Everyone Attain Repairs Today) Workcamp to bring parishioners from our community to North Carolina to do mission work. Currently, 13 high school students are participating from St. John’s and St. Joe’s. Our students will be placed in worksites ranging from low-income daycares, homeless shelters, or homes of the low-income or disabled elderly. Their service work may include building wheelchair ramps or repairing rotted floors and ceilings, and painting. While our days are spent doing service, our evenings are spent with other teens from across the U.S. engaging in liturgy, prayer, music, worship, adoration and more. It is often questioned why we ‘go away’ to serve, when there is much needed help in the Twin Cities. The answer to that question is that our parish youth do serve locally. We help with Mary’s Place, Feed My Starving Children, Hopkins Care Center, St. Margaret’s Cemetery Clean-up, Fall Leaf raking for our parishioners, the Life-Care Center and much more. Also, traveling out of state gets teenagers out of their comfort zone; they have an opportunity to see other cultures and meet people from other states which is all beneficial. Furthermore, the fact that we spend a week together in close quarters, praying and serving, allows for amazing experiences to occur. The estimated cost of this experience is approximately $5,000 which includes necessities such as transportation, gasoline, supplies and more. In addition to that cost, students pay an average of $300 and also work at fund-raisers. The Opportunity Outreach collection will help defray these costs. From Father Goman: I will be away this weekend outside Omaha (June 10-11) celebrating the 25th ordination anniversary of one of my “directees” from the years when I was a spiritual director at St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas. He and his family have been very close friends since those days of old. Pray for him this weekend and for all who are celebrating anniversaries of ordination and religious profession. In many ways, we all are their families and communities. The PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL meets on Tuesday, June 13 for a combined business and end-of-the-year social. Please join me in extending our thanks for wonderful and effective service to the parish by MICHAEL GALLAGHER and BILL AND AMY HOHENECKER who have completed three years on the Council. We will welcome their successors that night, and introduce them to you in the next bulletin. |
