“Arise and Eat, Else the Journey Will Be Too Great for You.” (I Kings 19:7) |

I am very happy to welcome Deacon Gregory Abbott to our parish for a summer pastoral experience with this great community of faith. As you get to know him and as he gets to know us, both will learn from the other. I am looking forward to his help at Masses and in pastoral work, and to his companionship at the rectory. Keep him and this assignment in your prayers. —Father Ralph Summertime Greetings! My name is Deacon Gregory Abbott. I am a seminarian studying for ordination as a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. God willing, I'll be ordained a priest on Saturday, May 26th, 2007. As an ordinary part of formation for priesthood, seminarians, like myself, who are entering their fourth year are sent out to serve in a local parish. I am encouraged and grateful to see that you have a tradition of praying for vocations to the religious life, priesthood and deaconate here at St. John’s. I am from that foreign country on the “other side of the river” known as St. Paul. I ventured over that great divide of the Mississippi River a few years ago when my Carmelite Religious Community moved to St. Joseph’s Church in Hopkins. I have come to enjoy the Minneapolis side of the world—but you can keep the traffic! My occupational background includes time working in guest services and physical therapy in a long-term care facility and a hospital in St. Paul. I am excited that I will be spending 10 weeks this summer with you at St John's learning about parish ministry and serving as a deacon. I am looking forward to meeting you in person throughout the summer; please feel free to introduce yourself to me. You will be the lucky (or unlucky!) recipients of my first homilies at Sunday and weekday liturgies. Please be patient and don't spend too much time counting the "umms" and "ahhs." I am grateful for the opportunity to spend time with and learn from your beloved pastor, Fr. Ralph Goman. Many people have already told me what a wonderful priest you have in Fr. Goman. We have already established that when the morning newspaper comes and he gets the “Source section” and I get the “Sports section.” We’re getting along quite well! Talk to you soon! —Deacon Gregory
