Arise and Eat, Else the Journey Will Be Too Great for You.” (I Kings 19:7)

A WARM WELCOME TO YOU AND TO ALL

The big news in our Archdiocese is that Bishop John Nienstedt will become the Coadjutor Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis.  In this capacity he will be mentored by Archbishop Harry Flynn for about a year.  Upon the official retirement of Archbishop Flynn, Bishop

Nienstedt will become the Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis. A coadjutor archbishop shares with the archbishop the governance, administration and pastoral ministry of an archdiocese.  An archbishop consults regularly with his coadjutor on important matters regarding the archdiocese.  A coadjutor archbishop immediately succeeds the local archbishop upon his resignation and automatically takes his place if he is incapacitated.

The other big news is that Archbishop Flynn invites us all to the Liturgy of Welcome for Coadjutor Archbishop Nienstedt at St. Paul Cathedral; that Mass is on Friday, June 29, at 2:00 pm.  There is a reception for the new Archbishop at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (at 11 E. Kellogg Boulevard—down the hill from the Cathedral) beginning at 4:00 pm following the Mass.  Perhaps these seem like awkward times.  However, I hope a good representation from our parish will welcome this opportunity to get to know the new bishop, to pray for him, and to pray for blessings on his pastoral and administrative leadership of our archdiocese.  We have had a long and honorable line of archbishops.  Archbishop Nienstedt has “big shoes” to fill, and our prayer and support will help him respond to this call of God.

Have you still got the green CALLED BY NAME cards?  Remember, these are an opportunity to raise up names of men and women who seem to you to have the qualifications to serve the church in dedicated and ordained roles as priests, sisters, brothers and deacon.  I have received a few; there must be more; please turn them in if you can.  Pray and work for quality, pastoral leadership in our church.

Remind your children—pre-school through 6th grade—that the CHILDREN'S COLLECTION at the 10:00 am Mass will provide new materials for the Liturgy for Children.  That program will pick up again once school starts.

It is summer time, and that means VACATION TIME for most of us, including me.  I will be away Monday through Thursday this week, and again Friday through Friday, July 6th through the 13th.  Mass and Scripture/Communion

services will be held at the usual Mass times, led by our trained and delegated deacons and Eucharistic Ministers, as well as the Redemptorist Fathers and our summer missionary priest (see notes on him elsewhere in this bulletin).  Thanks to all of them, I will be refreshed by the breezes and beauty of the North Shore.

                                                                                                                                     —Father Ralph
