WELCOME TO THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD'S DAY . . . Obviously summer is winding down quickly. Let me share some things that have happened to make the time pass quickly, and not always in a pleasant way: The parish computer system “burned out” and it took about 10 days for repairs, and we are still recovering. One of the storms put us out of electricity (phones, computers, lights. . .you know the routine!) for four days. Two wonderful, young couples lost their newborn, first child within three days of each other—incredible sadness for them and those who love them, but an uplifting, spiritual experience for me to baptize and confirm them into the fullness of Jesus' life. A real “slump” in Sunday Mass attendance is a concern for me—where is everyone on Sunday, who/what are they worshipping? Lectors, altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers, usher-greeters who have been faithful to their ministry this summer are edifying, but too many of those in these ministries have not shown up for their assigned duties. A lack of interest among young students (and their parents?) to become altar servers is disconcerting to me and may result in less servers being assigned to Masses. School enrollment is up slightly, bucking the demographics but indicating strong support and effective word of mouth PR from school families and parishioners. New principal of our school and new Youth Minister—both of whom you will meet in person very soon—are promising for a new spirit and leadership in those important programs. The Garage Sale (September 8) is a grand re-union for parishioners to end the summer, and I am looking forward to it, as I know you all are.
Please talk up R. C. I. A.—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS. Talk it up with people who might want to discern becoming members of the Catholic faith, with young adults and young marrieds who have questions, concerns, anger, lack of knowledge about our faith, men or women engaged to a Catholic, anyone who wants to “update” their knowledge of the Catholic faith and Church and grow in it. This group of R.C.I.A. members will meet about three out of four Thursdays through Easter, beginning with an information night on Thursday, September 20, 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Invite someone, come with them, call me at the Parish office for more information and to register with me beforehand. And pray for those making a decision about R.C.I.A. —Father Goman
