LET US GREET EACH OTHER IN JOY—

CHRIST IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD!

What is new in your life this Easter season?  What are the effects that you are experiencing of dying and rising with Jesus?  All of us can boast now that we are truly sons and daughters of God, begotten by God (as St. John proclaims in the second reading today).  If we are God's children, it follows naturally and supernaturally that we are truly brothers and sisters to each other, to all people.  We are then capable, by God's love for us, of loving one another.  Obviously we do not always live in love with each other.  At times we despise another, for a short time or for a long period.  We are separated in many ways from many around us.  This is because of feelings, political positions, religious differences, approaches to family issues and issues of war, immigration, etc.   We feel that separation, and good people are not happy with themselves because of separation.  And doesn't that attest to the reality that we are called, and know the truth of that call, to be brothers and sisters to each other and to all people?  The first reading of today's Easter-Mass celebration shows how early believers in Jesus tried to live as a loving and supportive community.  They did not always succeed, but their efforts are inspiring and instructive to us.  Pope John Paul II challenged us through the years:  "Our divisions prevent our neighbors from hearing the Gospel as they have a right to do so [from us]."  The answer to the question so popular today—what would Jesus do? —is the answer to what we must try to do every day, especially at Easter time.  A new way of living is ours!

Next Sunday at the 6:00 p.m. Mass we will send our 10th grade Confirmation candidates to the Archbishop for Confirmation in a brief prayer ceremony.  They will be confirmed at St. Paul Cathedral on Monday, May 1.  Pray for them and prepare to welcome them into their new roles as helpers with the rest of us adults in witnessing to faith in their daily lives, and serving the work of our parish community in various ministries.
